depends on what you need for work or such , for closer to london area then brighton is artsy and nice but my money would be on bristol .its got a real small town feel but mega vibrant and crafty and  a bit cheaper as its  further west

look out, it's behind you AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!

I can third vote Bristol although it can be a bit much at times. I used to live in the city center but found the whole 'i'm more hipster than you' scene a bit much/ I do still visit all the time though. Maybe living on the outskirts wouldn't feel like such a hipster bubble.

Exeter is good, falmouth has a good art uni so thats pretty good art wise. Brighton is fantastic but very expensive to live.

I'm a newbie but stumbled across your post.  I live on the south coast, as pretty much central, coastal and southern as you can get.  It's great down here.  hour and a half to London by car, less by train.  10 mins to stretches of beach and coastline from my house and 2 mins to the countryside by car....Oh and where I live has 2 cities within 30 mins, just over an hour to Brighton in one direction and Bournemouth in the over.  Oh and 20mins over the sea by cat to IOW.....  I do love it.  If I'd live anywhere else in in England it would be Devon or Cornwall, also on coast but south west.

If Bristols too big for you, Bath is quite nice although a bit expensive. I used to live in Exeter but found it to be a little too far from everywhere else

Iblamemonkeys you must be pretty close to me (Waterlooville) Smiley

I'm midway between Portsmouth & Petersfield, Portsmouth & Southampton have some good shops & like iblamemonekeys says not far from London (hour on the train from Petersfield), Brighton & Bornemouth. There are a few Crafty places up near Andover too (just north of Winchester)

Generally the closer to london/A3/M3/Decent rail link the more expensive though
