(Image put on top to prevent awkward "belly shot" preview icon!)

Whilst perusing a certain vintage clothing website, I found a dress I fell in love with.  However, I've got some funky sizing issues and the comments on the dress all mentioned flimsy fabric.  I decided to make my own, and go as a "vintage dame" for Halloween!

I used the top from this pattern:
and the skirt from this one:

The original dress:

I also put my hair up in curlers for the old-school look:

the back (bobby pins unfortunately quite visible):

I followed a tutorial on YouTube from LisaFreemontStreet, who has wonderful vintage hair tutes.  Here's a link to the video I used: http://www.youtube.com/user/LisaFreemontStreet#p/c/055F488FBAA68C38/2/bLes03ICsSA

If I had to do it all over again, I would have made the skirt more simply - maybe just a half-circle instead of all of those godets!  But I do love the dress and how it turned out.  I even cut out a little tulle petticoat from another dress to make it flare a bit.  It was very fun to go out in!

DH has been playing a lot of Plants vs. Zombies lately, and he decided to go as Crazy Dave this year.  He made all of his costume components, but no one at the party knew the character... Sad  I thought it was very well-executed!

He made a sunflower with a sun ready to be harvested, as well as filling about 80 little envelopes with candy and putting the seed labels on them.

He's Craaaazy!

And a reference shot of Crazy Dave in case you're not familiar with the game:

Thanks for looking!  C&C always welcome!

Great dress and you can wear it for more than Halloween. Your hair is adorable done that way!

Great job with the dress and it can be worn to so many places. Mixing and matching patterns can give you some great outfits. Changing sleeves or collars give you a whole new look. By the way the hubby did a great job with his costume also.

Thanks, all!  I enjoyed the process, and I'm psyched about a new outfit!

Your dress looks lovely, and its so much better when you can make your own that fits you perfectly rather than buy store bought and having to put up wit it not feeling right, great work Smiley

but your husband, CRAZY DAVE! What an awesome idea! 6 months ago I was completely addicted to that game! (I've managed to wean myself off now, but it was quite intense for awhile!) His beard and pot hat is just perfect! I can't believe he even has a sun flower! And all that effort into making up seed packets! Wish I'd been there to get a packet Smiley
Did he spend the whole night talking like crazy dave? That crazed grumbling rant which is impossible to understand?
Such a shame no one knew him Sad
I hope he still had a good night though Smiley

He does go all out...  He didn't do a lot of mumbling out in the open - he was feeling a little self-conscious that no one knew who the character was.  But he'll grumble/mumble a bit for me if I ask since it amuses me so much!  Smiley
