It's hard to say, without knowing his style... if he wears suits and ties a lot, a bunch of nice pocket squares can be a great gift... or if he's more casual, how about a messenger bag?  Here's a link to a great tut:

I'm in a similar dilemma.
Right now, I'm thinking about making a bunch of warm cuddly stuff like handwarmers, a adipose warmer like this (he's a Dr. Who fan), and whatever else I can come up with.

It might help if you keep an eye out for any needs he may have in the coming weeks, or if you just want to make him something more fun and less practical, you could make a list of all his interests, hobbies, and lifestyle and get inspiration from that.

wow, yeah, the messenger bag looks awesome. could also be something he needs. plus, he won't need to wear that ol' backpack anymore. lol.
anyhow, only problem is, i made a messenger bag for my ex. and i don't like repeating myself. Wink but then, i might in this case.
His style is more casual to more-than-casual. Still, with the new job he might need some down-dressed office clothes, tho. Maybe a cardigan. But just a cardigan would be so boring. it should be personalized. but how do you personalize a cardigan???

oh and britannica, those adipose warmers are sooo cute. i don't even know what they are, but i just love them.
