Great job on your first crochet project.  It's absolutely beautiful!!!  And good for you to tackle granny square first!  I finally learned the basic granny square myself and I learned to crochet at about 7 or 8.  Just thought it was too hard and never bothered to learn.  And now that I know how, I feel pretty lame for not trying sooner.
Love the color choices of this blanket.
