My daughter wanted to be a mummy... a dirty old mummy. So last year in the Halloween clearance we found a white ninja costume to alter. It was perfect to use because of the full hood and finger gloves. I tea dyed the polyester fabric to get the gross dirty effect. Then I tea dyed an old bed sheet to shred and attach to the costume base. I hand stitched all the strips on. Just draped and knotted it all together until it looked cool. For the shoes I dyed a pair of white canvas tennis shoes brown and glued strips of the bed sheets onto them. I think that was my favorite part. I want a pair for myself! Since most of her face was covered all I had to do for makeup was put dark eyeshadow around her eyes for a hollow effect. We wore it out to 4 or 5 places and it got better every time because it it got more frayed and wrinkled and knotted up. She loved it and we got HUGE compliments everywhere we went. It made me proud when people came up to her to say how much they loved the costume and she would reply "Thanks my mommy made it for me!"
