I'd rather swing on the moon than a star.

I got married in November 2009 (yeah, I've been away for a while!)  and my mom made my dress.  I picked purple for my wedding dress since we were having a small wedding, I don't like white, and purple is my favourite colour.

While we were at KMart looking at decorations, we spotted this absolutely hideous sewing basket ornament and I thought to myself "I can make this better!".

On the left, the original ugly ornament and on the right, my re-design made to reflect the making of my dress:

I think the only part still original is the basket, spools, and the pin cushion (though I did swap the top for a swatch of dress fabric)! I very carefully peeled it apart to discover that the whole thing was only hot glued together, which made it really easy for me to pull apart and re-do.  I used pins we used while making the dress, and re-wrapped the spools with leftover thread.  The small spool of ribbon was made by making 2 small circles out of card stock and using some scrapbook "pop up" foams to make the middle.  The ribbon wasn't used in my dress, but it was used in other wedding projects. In the back, I glued in one of our match book notebook favours, and I added the two flags as my husband is British and I am American.

My mom loved it so much, she didn't put it away with her ornaments!

Your version is amazing! It's way better than the original. Grin I love how you used all of the different things from your wedding - they really make it special Smiley

Thanks! I gave it to my mom around Thanksgiving last year, and she took it into work to show all her co-workers, she loved it so much.

This ornament looks really great and your mom is totally right in loving it. I would not store away such a beautiful ornament if I were given one. Smiley

As long as it is colourful I love it.

Thanks!  I just can't believe the Martha Stewart line had something so ugly to begin with!
