Last month my niece called me and told me my sister, (her Mom), had just gotten a new dog from a co-worker. A chihuahua named Mr. Pickles.

Well, between her giggling and bouts of laughter, I managed to understand the true reason for her call.
She wanted me to crochet a pickle costume for Mr. Pickles.
(She'd been looking everywhere for a dog pickle costume but couldn't find one anywhere.) She also wanted his name on the costume.

So, without a clue as to the size of this dog, I jumped into this project whole-heartedly.
(A dog named Mr. Pickles MUST have a pickle costume!)

I finished it and sent it off last week.
I got some photos of the dog from my sister the other day.
(Please click on the photos to enlarge them).

Here he is in all his glory. (He looks like the Green Giant's Little Green Sprout. LOL!)

Here's another shot from the back.

I used Simply Soft yarn in dark green.
I graphed the words "Mr.Pickles" at http://www.celticxstitch.ie/cgi-bin/stitches.cgi (A Celtic Cross Stitch site with a free graph generator).

Then I tunisian crocheted the Mr Pickles graph with a J-size cabled hook.

Here's the back and the underside. See the seem on the underside? That's where I joined the costume by whip-stitching it there.

I then had to make two leg holes by single crocheting with a regulare J hook. I had to guess as to the size and just hoped it would fit.

I also made a spiffy vine hat using a green pipecleaner/chenille stem.
Oh, I forgot to mention, I cut green felt circles out and sewed them all over the costume too.

I hope my sis gets to bring in Mr. Pickles to her work for Halloween or at least answers her door with the dog in her arms so the kids can enjoy it. (My sister says she loves the Mr Pickles sweater so much that he will definitely be wearing it throughout the winter as she lives in Wisconsin and this dog doesn't have a very furry coat.)

Happy Halloween everyone!

This is so funny and cute!  I dont know whats funnier though, the fact that he has a pickle costume or his name being mr pickles.  Either way you did an excellent job making this without having the dogs measurements as it fits him perfectly.  You are right though, he looks like sprout.   Cheesy

Want to learn to crochet or knit?  I have a ton of extra crochet hooks & circular knitting needles.  Will throw in some pattern books and yarn for anyone interested in a swap.

what a fantastic coat and name for a dog!
I think he must be related to my dog Jimmy, tho with not such googly eyes.

I've started a wist!

That is just too funny!
You did a great job on it too.  I'm sure that Mr Pickles will be wearing it more than just around Halloween... little dogs get cold quickly Wink

Did she happen to say why she named him that?

OH my GOD.
If you have a pattern for this, would you possibly send it my way?
I have a cat named Pickles, and we're currently staying at my dads house. Everyone here calls him Mr. Pickles - this would be insanely funny/perfect.

Hi, Whoracle!

All I've got is this graph pattern I made of the words "Mr Pickles"

Do you tunisian crochet? If not you can probably single crochet it instead.

This is adorable and totally hilarious! The sweater turned out really really nice. Mr. Pickles (**giggle**) is a lucky pup. The hat is cracking me up!

when i first saw the name for this post i was thinking of the sandwhich shop chain in Sacramento, California called Mr. Pickles.  it'd be funny if mr. pickles (the dog) went for lunch at Mr. Pickles (the sandwhich shop) in his pickle costume!

your costume was great. i loved it!
