i agree with nico-tiro.she has good advice (as do the others) i've lived in the west end (jervis & robson), new west, and east van (commercial & 7th).
new west was pretty cheap to live but i hated it.
the west end is fun but expensive
east van is cool because it's cheaper, and it's still close to everything.

Check out vancouver.craigslist.org for a whole bunch of places to rent and a bunch of jobs!  Its a great site!
