Really, this is the first thing I thought of when I saw this challenge. It was made as a present for a friends birthday in october (yes I'm early, but early is good) who want to look, as she put it, artistic. What's more artistic than pencils? A perfect match I thought. Plus I haven't crafted for a challenge for awhile so it was good to get back to it. Here's my entry:

A rainbow pencil fan-style necklace!

I used a packet of coloured pencil and 1 HB (the yellow one 3rd from the left) that I sawed to size and drilled at the top.

On me:

Plus a matching bracelet from the left-overs, I don't know if this counts for the challenge, does a set count as one item? But I still want to post pics:

The zig-zag was a bit serendipitus. This was my first time using a saw so it turned out wonky. I used the angle to my advantage to get the cool zig-zag effect.

The set:

Things I learned while making this set:

1. It is very easy to saw through pencils
2. Tools are not as scary as I thought
3. It is hard to drill through cylindrical objects
4. I like drilling through pencils because of the lovely puff of colour that occurs when you hit the lead.

I hope you guys like this. I'll update (in october!) when my friend gets her present!

I love this idea!  My mom is also an artist and this would make a great gift for her!  Thanks for the inspiration!

I like your project but I would cut off the points off the pencils in fear of being stabbed. Or you can see about fitting beads at the ends and glueing them on. Otherwise great job.

Nice! Did you use a hand drill or a power drill? I find it's way easier to do little fiddly things with hand tools.

I know some Arty girls that would LOVE this set.
I might have to find a drill and get crafty.

Yes, I used a hand drill, power drills scare me. I used a craft knife to make a groove to fit the drill bit into to avoid slipage.

I've worn it briefly a couple of times for photos and sizing and not found stabbage to be an issue. The coloured leads are pretty soft and the knecklace length has enough give to simple move instead of stabbing, but thanks for the advice.

this is such a cute idea!  i do like the bracelet better though.  just because i know i would hurt myself somehow with the sharpened ends of the necklace.  or worse, break them!  that would suck the most, to ruin the shape.

That's a nice colorful idea and the bracelet is particularly fun. I wonder how you would go about making a matching ring? That could be an interesting challenge. Good job!

This is great! I actually like the bracelet more than the necklace, but they are both fantastic.

Love the necklace so much that I might make one for myself! However I would coat the pencil leads with clear acrylic so that the pencils wouldn't mark up my clothing.

Very unique and clever!

Although you do know, however, that you are to never, ever run with a pencil with a sharp point.  So as an overprotective mother   Roll Eyes (soon to become an overprotective grandmother), I must caution you to never EVER run while wearing this lovely although potentially dangerous necklace!!

I see you're a Sydneysider, do you ever go see the Design Exhibition that NIDA has at the end of each year? You might enjoy it, the students have a lot of interesting stuff to show that they've been making throughout the years they've been there. There should be a new exhibition coming up soon. I saw one of these pencil necklaces at an exhibition there a few years ago and it jogged my memory.
