I know it is not the best machine out there but I like it and it does great for me - especially hemming jeans and BTU pants.

Anyway - When in position A (straight stitch) the needle seems to be off to the right some and not down the center.  I flipped through all the stitch options and it moves the needle this way and that but when I return to A it is off center.  I tried to reinstall the presser foot but that just snaps in - no brainer  - no play right or left.

Any suggetions on how to fix this alignment?

Without having a model number or a picture of the machine it's tough to say.

If the straight stitch is it's own setting (zig zag is a separate setting) sometimes adjusting the stitch width may move the needle back.  If the straight stitch and zig zag stitches are the same setting, just width differences I would try contacting the manufacturer.

What would you get if you crossed a goat and a sheep?
An animal that eats tin cans and gives back steel wool.

Stitch width!  That was it!  I set it back to the standard mark and it recentered the needle.  Thanks you so much!
