i found this semi-gaudy, but beautiful floor lamp in a Design Within Reach catalog.. (which is super expensive..) but it seems relatively easy to make.

i was wondering if any of you lovely people had any suggestions on where i can find cheap supplies for the disks that cascade down. there's another variation of the lamp in the catalog that has stainless steal disks, and i kind of like that idea... but i also think it would be fun to have a color.. or maybe some stainless steal in with some transparent burgandy and some of the creme colored stuff..

so yes... any sites that sell cheap random junk that i can turn into such gorgeousness?

Those thingies hanging down remind me of a lampshade my mom once made out of white rice paper. After glueing the paper to the metal frame, she then painted shellac/varnish over the rice paper which stiffened it.

If you were to make this, it would be extremely labor-intensive. You might find something similar in the sequins section of a bead store or notions department in a fabric/craft store.

Good luck!

They are capiz shells. I think if you do a google search you could probably find them. They did an idea similar to this on Trading Spaces, also on Changing Rooms(the BBC one) They just used a little dremel drill and drilled into the shells and then hung them onto the base of whatever they used. I hope this helps you some.It is a beautiful lamp,so when you finish, be sure to post the pics. Best of luck to you.
