Hi, all!  I'm making a rather full, long, gathered cotton skirt as part of a costume.  I want to stiffen the hem to give it a little body, and make walking easier.  I know about horsehair braid, as well as felt.  I'm wondering, though, if simple double fold bias tape would work well enough?  Bias tape is my go-to for hems, and it usually gives me a nice line, but I also never, ever work with gathered waists, or quite this much fabric.  I was just wondering if anyone had any experience, advice, or input?  Should I just stick with the horsehair braid?

Do you think the bias tape would be stiff enough? I think it will work to cover the hem, but it sounds like you're looking for something heavier. What about iron on hem tape? Or interfacing and then doing a rolled hem treatment on it? Otherwise I would probably go with the horsehair.

You could go with your bias hem tape and place a strip of nylon netting inside the hem.  Might work better than horse hair.
