so, i've been looking around at some patterns, and being fairly new to knitting, i'm a bit confused by something. i've seen several patterns that call for using both DPNs and circular needles. if they both knit in the round, why would once switch mid-pattern? if it's because the diameter of the circular bit is too short for the circulars, couldn't one just keep using the circulars and simply start knitting with magic loop from that point on? or simply switch to a smaller size circular?

Yes, you can certainly use the longer circs and magic loop, though if you're doing a hat, a 16" won't ML at all. But you can switch to a longer one, or use 2 circs instead. There's also a single loop variation of ML where you can use a 24-29" needle - http://south-mountain-naturally.blogspot.com/2009/01/tutorial-single-loop-instead-of-magic.html

yay, my logic makes sense!! they patterns i was looking at were for slippers and for a bag....i have issues with DPNs so i really prefer to use the circulars and magic loop whenever possible. thanks!!!! Cheesy
