Just Loved this spherical pattern!!. You are right, making them on the fly is good, but you can really tell the difference on making this style of Sphere! I put mine in a blog, with photo at:

I made a crazily coloured ball for my daughters stroller using your pattern!

Fun little thing to make, compared to the standard round shapes!
