In the spring of 2007 I did this drawing of a bicycle on a pattern rainbow over a field of flowers and have always wanted to use it for something. Finally I tried it out on a tee shirt, and I'm pretty pleased with the result.

I love bicycles, I love rainbows, I love patterns, and I love fields of flowers! Plus I like tee shirts, so this project pleases me greatly.

I used an American Apparel shirt I got for $1 in Missouri and a red fine line Sharpie. I put a cardboard box inside the shirt to keep it tight and then started drawing on the fabric. When I was finished I set the ink with an iron, which has done a pretty good job. I've washed the shirt in the sink a couple times and there's been some slight bleeding, but really it's more like a faint pink glow around the lines and I like it that way. I think I will try another shirt using a different ink, maybe a fabric marker.

As always, there are more photos and info on my website!

I love that design!  Very pretty!  I did not know you could set the ink in with an iron, thanks for that!

I LOVE this!  I am dying to do something similar.  My original plan was to do a drawing with a sharpie and then embroider certain parts of the design to give it more oomph.  But after seeing this I am thinking the embroidery will be unnecessary.  Love it, am hitting This Rocks right now!

PS - after reading your blog post, maybe I will do the embroidery after all.  That way the design will stay even after being machine washed...hmmm.  Have to think about it, but I still love this!

what a pretty design!

clever use of a cardboard box as well...

If you use a bit of vinegar in your water, it should help set the inks...but I do like the bit of softened edges...it makes it very dreamy!

another project of yours I admire--it is so fun to see all of them!
