Recently my great uncle passed away.  In his youth, he was in the Navy, so my family had the American Legion come out and do a 21 gun salute.

I felt compelled to get a shell from each volley, but now I don't know what to do with them.

mhmm. maybe you coult put them into a shadow box to make some sort of scene.
maybe a graphic theme like a labyrinth or something if you have enough?

or if you want it to be more personal, maybe something like that? http://www.thegiftexperience.co.uk/cms_media/images/gone_fishing_shadow_box.jpg
one section for the shells, one for a picture and i'm sure you can find a few other ideas Smiley

I would go simple and patriotic, maybe with a picture of your uncle as well. a small shadow box with an american flag in the background behind a picture of your uncle with the shells in front, maybe a small flower?? just an idea

Sorry to hear about your Great Uncle.

I've seen folks make necklace pendants out of them.  Could be an idea, then gift them to the family?

Make a wind chime. Put it in your garden and plant some flowers in his memory.

Here's a website that shows you how to make a string of lights with the shells.

You can also make pens with them.  There are a lot of websites dedicated to art using the shells.  Just put in shotgun shell art and see what you get.

You could make a bracelet or a belt with them.
