I suggest buying some cheap fabric or just muslin and start making pieces for yourself. It is way easier to learn to make clothing if you have a model to work with(ie. yourself!) and since the pieces are bigger you can see your mistakes. Doll clothes are more complicated b/c of all the small seams..

I did learn to sew by starting with barbie doll clothes, didn't know any better at time, but it did work. also did childrens clothes like P.J.'s and pants ect. I would personally say to jump in with the patterns that are marked easy. the kwik sew book are excellent for instructions on how to do things and you have lots of patterns to choose from, just trace off what you need. Remember to press, press, press, as you sew it makes all the difference, and pay attention to the seam allowances it also makes a big difference.
You may what to check out the second hand stores like the salvation army or goodwill or what ever you have in your area for material, sewing supplies and gadgets and also patterns that people have donated, it's a cheap way to get your self supplied.
