Tri-beetle hat

It's almost hat weather here in Iowa. I found this Knitty pattern through Ravelry http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTcrosscountry.html

I didn’t think cotton was probably a good choice for fair-isle, but of course I went ahead and used it anyway. All in the name of being cheap. This is my first fair-isle project.

The hat was quite roomy, but after lining with fleece the fit has drastically improved. Check out http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2008/06/fully-lining-hat... for some good tips on lining hats.

The only chart I used from this pattern was the snowflake chart. I was pretty intent on having a dinosaur hat, and found a chart http://www.yarn-visions.blogspot.com/2009/01/brontosaurus... for a triceratops. It looked more appropriate for intarsia, so I added some more squares here and there to make it more fair-isle friendly and avoid huge long floats. I also decided beetles would be a good addition and made up my own chart for those. The beetle legs looked pretty awful - the individual green stitches got lost in the background. So, I duplicate stitched them after the hat was complete.

Yarn: recycled cotton from thrift store sweaters
