My new great-nephew will be in college by the time I get this hat figured out!!

I made my first one and it turned out great because I didn't know what I was doing.....now I can't get past ripping and knitting.

When I get to the last 4 stitches and start the I-Cord and get about 1 inch long, when I look back at the beginning of the I cord I see gaps.  That didn't happen on my first one!!!

Is it because I am pulling to tight when I start the I-Cord.

Am I suppose to knit one row with those very last stitches or start the I cord which is knitting the first row and then sliding to the other end?

I have seached high and low on the computer, book stores and library's for examples so I can see what I am doing wrong.

Can anyone here please help me???
