So I decided to make a cake based off of Super Mario Bros.  I decided to do the ending of 1-1 so that I could make the steps and castle.

In the level the ground is brown also, but I ran out of brown coloring.  The steps and castle are made of rice crispies treats covered with gum pastes and painted with food coloring.  The ground is gum paste.  I didn't have enough to cover the whole cake but it was enough for the pics.  The cake is chocolate.  The pole is a skewer covered with gum paste.

This is the steps with mario climbing them.  Printed Mario because there was no way I could make one.

This is the (printed) flag at the bottom of the pole

Here is the castle with another (printed) flag.  I know this flag doesn't come out until Mario reaches the pole, but the castle looked sad.

This was my first attempt at the cake.  I made marshmallow fondant and made a huge mess.  The cake broke as I took it out.  It turned out all lumpy, and I put the fondant on in several pieces instead of rolling out one big one.  I wanted to get the sugar off of it so I wet a paper towel and wiped it down and then realized that was a bad idea.  I ended up with a brown melty mess.

I think over all the entire project took me about almost 10 hours.  I have discovered that I will never be a baker or a cake decorator.

I am so glad you have the guts to put your all into a baking project like this!  I am a total Bake Failure, so I don't even try.  I have cool ideas, like yours, but I know they will end up smeared all over the wall due to my frustration.  Kudos to you!!

Please do not get discouraged!  You took on a pretty tough task for your first try.  A tip for the fondant, that I learned (I used powdered sugar to keep things from sticking the first time too)- rub down the work area with shortening, and the rolling pin too, rather than dusting w/ powdered sugar.  Keep on going!

That's a big project for a first timer-very brave. Don't give up now, you know what not to do next time and the results will be better.

And the most important thing - the cake is chocolate! So those of us who are chocoholics are jealous that you get to eat it!

Fun idea.  Smiley

This is awesome!!!  I love to bake, but I would definitely be waaay too much of a chicken to even attempt such a huge undertaking!  This is completely impressive!
