It was my friend's twenty-first birthday last week and this is what I made for her present. She's just graduated from a degree in Psychology and Neuroscience (and is about to start a Masters), so I thought something brain-based would be fitting.

This was going to be an applique, then it was going to be a quilted applique but then I decided a) the shirt I'd bought may not fit, thus wasting the brainy goodness and b) nobody wants their display of their brain-obsession to be restricted to just one outfit so it became a quilted broach.

I absolutely love the raised, quilted effect of the brain pattern. It was done with very small straight and zigzag machine stitching on two layers of pink cotton sandwiching light quilt batting leftover from a quilt I made earlier this year.

Any comments or criticism is very welcome.Does anyone have any suggestions for other things that could be made into a quilted broach?

Thank you!

What fun!  I, too, love the quilted effect.

How about a snail with a spiral in his shell?  That would be cute.
Love the brain btw. I could always use a second brain.

Oh, wow, you could sell a gazillion of these given the current trendiness of zombies and brain eating.
