Can anyone tell me where I can find a fabric store in the Boston area (I'm on the northshore) with modern and current fabrics? Please do not suggest JoAnn's.... All their fabrics look like bed sheets or like they're all from the bargain bin. Thanks

I have no idea of the quality of it, but I saw a fabric store on the 69 bus route between Harvard Square and Lechmere.

What value of "modern" are you interested in? Fashionable prints? Or quality fabrics? If you are looking for specific stuff, you might have a better time finding fabrics online. Emmaonesock.com (nayy) tends to have a lot of current prints and fabrics and good service, but isn't exactly bargain basement.  Fabric.com sometimes gets in fashionable prints, and fabricmartfabrics.com and fashionfabricsclub.com have both designer fabrics and an ever-changing range of prints; these three tend to have pretty good prices for the quality. equilter.com has a great search engine and lots of quilting stuff - but there is also a decent selection of rayons, rayon/cottons, and silks.

In the Boston area, you probably want some place that carries stock from NYC. Fabric Fix in Manchester, NH, has good quality and great prices. Winmil Fabrics in Chinatown has lots of small cuts of odds and ends from NYC. SewFisticated (Dorchester and Somerville) also carries NYC stuff, with great prices on linens, silks, and wools. Sew Lo in Cambridge (this is the one on the 69 route) has a lot of home dec, some wools, and random other stuff, but I don't often see trendy sorts of things there. And if you want high-quality stuff, try Sawyer Brook in Clinton MA - they also have an online website, so you can browse before visiting, or order online.

Zimman's in Lynn has a staggering array of home dec fabrics-- pricey, but totally worth looking. Lots of silk.

It's all the way in Arlington, but I love Fabric Corner (Mass Ave. and Mill St.).  Their selection is huge, they have a 10% off coupon on the website (that you can use each time you shop), and if you're on their mailing list you're privy to lots of additional sales (for example, this weekend, all fabric was 40% off due to a quilt show in the area).

I just read about this in the newest Improper Bostonian:
Sewfisticated at Twin City Plaza
14 McGrath Hxy. in Somerville 617-625-7996 and also in
Lamberts Plaza 735 Morrissey Blvd. in Dorchester

They sell discounted designer fabrics. Some are as low as 1.99/yard.

Sewfisticated is located about 5 blocks from Sew Lo Discount Fabrics, if that makes the trip worthwhile. . . you can get there via Lechmere station (via the Green Line Shuttle or any of the buses from Cambridge/Arlington/Somerville that go that route).  These are my "local fabric stores" (I prefer Sew Lo on Cambridge street, btw. . . and they recently started carrying discount yarn!!!).

I had no idea Sewfisticated was so close to SewLo! I'm definitely gonna have to stop by there soon.

If you are willing to drive up to NH, The Exeter Handkerchief Company has a ton of great upholstery type fabric (great for purses). There is a remnant area on the top floor where everything is $6 a yard. It is right next to the Exeter train station for the Downeaster that runs between Portland and Boston, so you could even take the train if you wanted. Here's the address:

48 Lincoln St Ste 1
Exeter, NH 03833-3218
