I have been searching for a new coffee table for what seems like years. Problem was I wanted one that was unique and that I could make different. I would passively and sometimes actively looking for a table in the second hand stores. Finally without even looking either way My sister and I took a stroll in our local habitat for humanity restore...and there it was!! I got it for 12 dollars. Couple days later and black spray paint, I now have the table I always wanted. The next thing I'm going to do is change my side table to be a backgammon board or one of those peg board games I haven't decided yet. I'm going to crochet little chess and checker pieces throughout the week.

It looks great.  I think I would have added an extra border around the game board, just to highlight it, but that's just me.

Nice work.

a silver or wood colored border would look cool, if you wanted to take that route. i like it how it is!

!!!! how did you get the checker pattern so perfect?!!!
I've been wanting to do that to all my boring white furniture (Ska-it-up!)
But I've been to scared that the taping will malfuntion.

exacto knife and a lot of patience...
I measured the exact center, then from there a measured a border of I think 30 sq cm, I can't remember. I knew that I needed eight by eight squares. I put 8 pieces of tape around the border, alternating between the white and black, I then did a grid of 4 long pieces vertical and horizontal using the tape as a measure for the dimension of the squares. Where they overlapped I cut out the squares with the exacto knife...I hope this makes sense. I'm sure I'm making it sound more difficult then it is. But that's how I figured it out.

This is so cute! I love it! My dining room table has a chess board (came that way was my Great Grans it's an antique) on it I never would have thought about doing a coffee table like that.

This is a great table! And an awesome price. What a wonderful find. Shows that sometimes the right piece is worth the wait. Oh, and I want a Cookie Monster lawn ornament!
