I decided to do a series of stitcheries based on the spam emails I get from time to time.
Here are the first two for your consideration.

Of course it does...?

Wow, an email from God! Awesome!

I will be doing more in due course, but I thought I'd post these for your viewing pleasure.

My questions to you:
Is this is scathing commentary on modern life and our fragile relationship with electronic communication..?
Is this kind of spam a language generated in a sort of internet chinese whispers?
Is this the first language that has been generated from within a virtual world?
Does me asking these questions turn this from craft into art?
Do art critics get paid for talking a lot about nothing?

Big love to you all (and I don't mean a polygamic tv show!)  Grin

These are awesome. I love the way you used different fonts and colors within the pieces. And the black is striking. *Hitting this rocks*

And I would take Big Love too, I am REALLY addicted to that show.

Firstly, those are great.
To answer your questions--->

My questions to you:
Is this is scathing commentary on modern life and our fragile relationship with electronic communication..? The fact that you're translating something that's purely on a computer into something that is tactile is definately a commentary on how far we've come from communicating with people.  It definately takes a little longer to cross stitch these words than to send them in an email.  Scathing or not--it's surely saying something.

Is this kind of spam a language generated in a sort of internet chinese whispers?  I've often thought about that myself.  I had started a list of the weird email subjects that spammail had and had thought about doing some paintings based on them but never did.  What struck me so much about it was the pure nonsensical way the words were put together.  Most made absolutely no sense.  I don't know why they think those words would make me want to click on the email which would either lead to to something they're trying to sell or some virus that some 8 year old thought up the night before.  Anyway--whispers or not, it's pretty interesting.

Is this the first language that has been generated from within a virtual world? I would say so.

Does me asking these questions turn this from craft into art?  The whole battle between art and craft is one that been raging for years. You have really opened up a can of worms here.  I don't know how many times we had discussions about this when I was in art school.  It seems that most artists like to distinguish themselves from others.  For some, the lines are clearly drawn, crafts are not art, they are utilitarian items made for everyday use or for simple pleasures like pottery, needlework, glass work, woodworking, weaving etc.  But then, of course, there are those that really like to blur the line, especially feminist art of the 70's--using fabric in paintings and so forth.  These days, there are artists using traditional "craft" materials to create "fine art" so I think the distinction is up to the artist.  Just know that you will always run into that person from the "old school" who will not think your work is art.  You have to define it yourself.

Do art critics get paid for talking a lot about nothing? some do--but I dislike most highly paid art critics because who cares what they say.  There's nothing worse than a critic.

This is freaking hilarious. The fonts you chose to use are excellent and really suit the projects.

'Who are YOU?' said the caterpillar.

'I--I hardly know, sir, just at present-- at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.'

Does me asking these questions turn this from craft into art?

The incorporation of the word "hinderpart" makes the first one art.  Cheesy

The second one reminds me of a neon church.

These just make me happy.  Grin

Yeah I thought of a Vegas church too. I L-O-V-E the font you chose for "god" too.

I did get an email from god once. It only said "J/K" and I think it had a virus.

seriously, these are an awesome use for what is otherwise useless (spam).

Curse you, MrXStitch!  This was seriously going to be my next big project and now it's just going to look like I copied you.  Wink Great work, though!

I love looking through my spam folder and reading the titles.  Some of them are just way too out there.
