We lost our first and oldest ferret sometime early this morning.  We're going to have him cremated.  Since the urns the cremation places sell are overpriced and not very creative, not to mention not really designed for ferrets, I'm making him an urn.  I started with a balsa wood box from the lovely Dollar Tree.  So far, I've only used a wood burning tool.

I like how it's coming out so far.  I'll put some sort of wood finish on it and I may line the inside.  When we get his ashes back, I think I'll put them inside a sock and then inside the box.  He was a notorious sock thief in life...  leaving piles of stolen socks beneath furniture.  I think I'll put a nice piece of felt on the bottom.

We also made an imprint of his paw before he passed.  We knew his time was short.  I used Crayola Model Magic.  In the past, I've made these with scultpy or fimo, but I like the way the Model Magic is super soft and less stressful for the animal.  You can get a nice deep print without a lot of pressure on the paw.  Unfortunately, the finished product isn't quite as nice.  The sculpty is a little nicer to write into as well.

And finally, here is the sweet soul that left us today.

It's always hard to lose a furry friend, but your urn is a wonderful and personal way to remember him.  And just remember, Nigel is waiting for you over the rainbow bridge.  Love from one ferret friend to another.

Thanks princess and Monkey.  It's never easy to lose them, but it is the worst part of having pets.  Making the urn was very therapeutic.

i'm so sorry for your loss!
my mom had 2 ferrets until last year -- mischievous, but awesome little fur-monsters! Cheesy
your urn is wonderful, and the paw-print is a lovely reminder of little nigel.

Nigel is adorable, and I am glad he has such a wonderful urn. I think I'll take plaster casts of my cat's pawprints, one day - it's such a good idea.

When she was good, she was very very good - but when she was bad she was fabulous.

I am so sorry.  Nigel was a handsome boy.  It is a perfect urn for him.  I love ferrets.  They are the sweetest & perpetual toddlers.  I have buried & cremated many of my furbabies in the last few years.  I know how raw your heart hurts now.  I am sending you the biggest hugs.

Aww, that's an absolutely perfect resting place for him. I lost my oldest ferret earlier this year also, while she was in the care of a friend of mine. She'd been ill for a while before that, then I had to move to a no-pets apartment (due to limited availability) with no notice after a house disaster and my huge-hearted friend was nice enough to take in all four of my little guys until I had my feet back on the ground. Cradles died in the night and my fiance and I went out and buried her on my friend's farm. She has a memorial rock but I wish I'd have thought of what you've done first. I'd like to keep her with me always but I feel kinda wrong about disturbing what was supposed to be her final resting place. We're moving again this month into a place where our fuzzy family can be happy together and though I hate thinking about losing any of my others, that's a really sweet way to keep them close.

Best wishes, he'd want you to feel better soon.
