Now I know this isnt 100% knitting related... but I was hoping someone could help.  I love the look of this scarf.  I know its pretty much only knotted... but my question is the yarn.  Do you buy it with the little tufts coming out like that or do you have to do something special?

Unless you spin your own yarn, I would imagine you buy it like that. I have some (considerably smaller) yarn like that ...

Yep, it looks like a novelty yarn made that way intentionally.  I also strongly suspect that these scarves are hand-chained, as in crochet.  (Fine that you posted it here, though.)  You could probably track down a yarn like that by searching yarn shops online by fiber content.

If it's commercial yarn, it looks like it might be Rowan Big Wool Tuft.  The picture's not great, but if you google, I'm sure you can find some projects and things to see it a bit better.
