Dust of Enchantment
« on: December 09, 2008 10:27:27 PM »

I recently saw a documentary about Sadako Sasaki, a little girl who died of the nuclear attack radiation in Hiroshima  1955. Here's a summary of her story:

...The young girl wasn't near Hiroshima at the time, but the effects of the atom bomb spread throughout the country and into surrounding towns, and she caught radiation sickness... When she was 11She became more and more limp each day. Her best friend, Chizuko Hamamoto, ... told Sasaki, "Don't you remember the story that if you fold 1000 paper cranes the gods will grant a wish and make it come true?" Hamamoto then folded a...beautiful golden crane. She handed the crane to Sadako and said, "Here's your first one."... Sadako Sasaki only managed to fold 644 cranes before she died on October 25, 1955. Her classmates thought of building a monument of Sadako holding a golden crane in her hand. In 1958 the statue was built in the Hiroshima Peace Park. The writing on the base of the statue says, "This is our cry, this is our prayer; peace in the world."

The story inspired me to make this doll depicting Sadako as an angel, wearing a pale cherry blossom kimono given by her mother, and holding the first golden crane folded by her best friend, Chizuko.

This is a beautiful doll.  The angel wings are wonderful and the tiny golden crane is amazing.  What a wonderful memorial to Sadako.

My son's 3rd grade class studies Sadako and learned to make paper cranes.  My son is now obsessed with making paper cranes, though he's nowhere near 1000 yet.

I think my cat is sending me subliminal messages...

Thank you for the kind comments Smiley
I have always been obsessed with peace cranes too which explains why I came up with all kinds of wearable peace crane origami. Maybe I should start recording every crane I fold and see if I can achieve 1000 cranes!
