My boyfriend's birthday was last month and I was really sick with the stomach flu that week, so I didn't make him a cake because I figured he didn't want to get sick.

Back story: this boy HATES (or pretends to hate) celebrating his birthday.

Well apparently he was upset because he didn't have a birthday cake.  His mom and I schemed up a plan to turn their cherry dessert at Thanksgiving into a birthday dessert by putting candles in it, but "it just wasn't the same."

I told him I'd make him a birthday cake but he said, "Nope, it's too late.  You'll just have to wait until next year."

Well, I decided that something else was in need of celebrating.

He can't grow facial hair very well, and it's been a running joke between us forever.  He did "no-shave November" last month and ended up with a little beard on his chin when he trimmed the rest off.

Soooo... I decided to make him a "CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BEARD" cake.

I was just going to make a simple 1-layer round cake with dark chocolate frosting, but I messed up. I tend to overbake things, so I took it out a bit early, and when I flipped it on my cooling rack, the middle fell out.

So what to do with a cake with no middle?  Cut the top off, use it for a mustache and make a BEARD cake!

For those of you interested...
I used the Vanilla Cupcakes recipe from Hello Cupcake and I made a dark chocolate buttercream with a stick of butter, about 2 cups powdered sugar, 1/2ish cups dark cocoa and a bit of milk.  I used black sugar crystals as an additional decoration.
