OK, so me and my boyfriend are going snowboarding in April 2009, and he has decided that he wants one of those hats with flappy ears on, now I'm pretty sure I can find a pattern for that no problems. HOWEVER - he wants his name on it (Tom) because he's found a website where a girls makes these made to measure but he doesn't want to pay the 30 that she is charging.
My question is....how do I go about crocheting his name into a pattern that I find that will presumeably be plain???

There are 2 easy options that come to mind for me, one is to just crochet the hat and embroider his name on after it's done OR if you know how to change colors http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa041203.htm would be the second logical step in your project. Good luck and I hope it comes out well

I have made crocheted hats with names on them.... What I do is make the hat, mainly out of single crochet... then, you can either single crochet the name from the top to bottom, pulling the loops up through the stitches.... or, you can do a nice cross stitch of the name across the front.... or, you can do a chain stitch, lay it down on the hat... forming the letters then tack it down.  The quickest and nicest looking is the first two that I mentioned.
Have fun.
