I just found out that I am going to Iraq for a year...and I leave in January  Sad.  Can anyone recommend a decent portable sewing machine?  I am hoping to have a lot of free time on my hands.

First thing you need to look into is electrical plugs, I can almost promise you they will be different than in the US.

Buying from Ebay EU or once you get there might be a better solution depending on how much weight/ volume of stuff you can take with you. But knowing what you want once your there would help for sure.

"Portable" is relative. My old full size machine was a table top model and saw plenty of travel even though it weighed in at a solid 40 lbs. I didn't mind the weight as I have a nice little wheely cart and never had to carry it more than from the cart into the car. YMMV. Personally I don't trust a machine so light my 6 year old could carry it in one hand, I've seen some itty bitty machines that she could. A machine that light is fragile & won't take the abuse of overseas travel IMO.

Personally I like Janome. The Sew Mini is a bit rinky dink, but they have several "compact" machines that are good, look at the Magnolia line.
