I usually hang out in the knitting forum but I have to admit, when it comes to lace it's so much easier to crochet it!  Only one stitch to keep track of and it's so easy to look back and see what you've been up to after a time away.

This shawl (admitedly a bad picture, will try to remedy later) is about 20" wide by 75" long.  It's long enough that it stays on my shoulders and drapes nicely.  I use it on my shoulders, over my head as a hood, as a scarf, as a blanket, the list goes on.  I love it!

Used hates to admit it 3 skeins of simply soft in charcoal grey.

I know what you mean about simply soft.  I couldn't resist buying some in red, as much as I didn't really want to, just because it was so cheap and relatively .. soft.

What stitch is this?

not sure of the stitch pattern.  It's a 7 row pattern, crocheted from a pattern called "long open shawl".  Pattern can be found here:
