I bought a pair of second-hand Birki's Papillio from eBay, and they have a very bright multi-coloured print on them. I'd love to paint them a darker, single tone colour. Anyone know the best paint to use?

I jazzed up a boring pair of black Birkenstock-like sandals using glitter and glue. I started off with a swirly pattern then decided to go with all blue, so that is why you can see some swils showing through. After I had sprayed them with the lacquer they were done. I took them into the craft shop where I bought the supplies to show them off and they put them in the kiln for about 10 mins to seal them. They are lasting well.

In the world of paint, a good primer is the key, (My husband works for a paint manufacturer)so I would recommend brushing the shoes with a an all purpose primer (ESP, every surface primer) then paint them with an oil based paint or water based plus lacquer. Good luck.

A photo of the completed glitter sandals is here (hopefully)

A closer view

and the materials used.
