What I am after is not a book with patterns, but something like a directory/encyclopedia of different crochet stitches.  Oh, and preferably in US terminology, not UK.  There are lots on Amazon but I have no idea which of them are any good.  Does anyone have any particular recommendations before I just go ahead and order one?

Thanks  Smiley

I like the Crochet Answer Book for that:

er, just re-read your post, and this one is probably not what you need.

This is the stitch guide I have:

I haven't had a chance to use it much yet, but I like it so far!

I'd go with the Harmony guides, I love mine.

Of course tattoos hurt...they're applied with needles, not kitten whiskers and bunny tails.

Thanks guys!

I have one of those Harmony books by Erika Knight about cable stitches (in knitting) and it's quite nice, so that might be worth a look.  Shame none of the bookshops near me actually stock many craft books, I might have to take a trip into town to see if I can some.

The Reader's Digest stitch guide is great, I use mine constantly. It's knitting and crochet which is great if you do both.
