So I am up to page 30 in the big resin thread.  However, today is my only day to go shopping and I haven't seen this question/answer yet.

If I am brand new to resin - never worked with it before. I am going to start with ice cube trays with images/photos embedded.  Eventually I will make jewelery either with the ice trays or perhaps with pendant trays.  But for now for practice I'm guessing that I'll be making magnets!

Is it best to start with epoxy or polyester if you have no experience?
Any favorite brands?

Thanks!

For something like magnets I would recommend polyester resin. It smells, but it is much faster to work with. Epoxy resin will take more then 8 hours to set for embeddings, but polyester resin is ready after 20 minutes or so!
