For a performance, I need to make 5 t-shirts that gradually get larger for the performer to change into. I was wondering-- how many yards would be needed to make a medium men's t-shirt? One? One and a half? How about an XL tee with long sleeves? And I would give extra points to anyone if they could help me out with deciding about how many yards I would need to make all 5 shirts!! But just a rough estimate for one would be great.

Thank you!!!!! Grin

According to Kwik Sew, you need less than 2 yards for any men's shirt up to an XXL (long or short sleeves):

Since you're making them progressively longer (and the longest back length is 31 inches for that pattern), I'd tend to get 9-10 yards of fabric so I'd be sure to have enough for the whole set.  Even if you just got enough to make 5  medium long sleeve T's, it's 8.75 yards, so I'd definitely go an extra yard or two.  Is it supposed to get correspondingly larger width wise, or just length wise?  That'll make a difference on how much fabric you need (the pattern also calls for 60" wide fabric).

Are you doing the incredible shrinking man?

Where did all this fabric come from? I CAN'T have bought THAT much!

Thanks so much! That's perfect.

Hah. Yeah, the costuming is part of a set of really complicated and diverse imagery with the body on stage. The effect I'm hoping for here is something along the lines of this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1NZ5pMUbnwY

Thanks again!
