I was commissioned by a friend to make a jacket. A civil war "enlisted man's" jacket. I hate it. It is the bain of my existence. I had to redraft from a smock (dress coat) lengthen (because he's like 6'5" or taller!) and alter then heck out of it. Now let me say, I'm a fairly decent seamstress. Not professional, but I can make decent clothing that looks like ready to wear.  Everything that could conceivably go wrong with this jacket has, right down to putting the button holes on the wrong side! I was so tired, and hey I'm a girl so they normally do go on this way!  Anyway, I fixed it as best I could,  so here is the monstrosity!

It looks good to me!  besides, it's THEIR buttons that are backwards!  Would be great to see a photo of your friend modeling it!

Unless military clothing is different the buttons are on there correctly.  Womens are right over left.   Mens are left over right.

Yeah the buttons are on the right way now. I had to take off all the buttons, sew  up and the button holes and redo it.

I would have him model it but he took it and left for a reenactment. And second, I told him I never wanted to see it again. Ever. LOL
