I recently got back into making mail after a few years off for bad ergonomics - I got RSI like woah from making the rings... This took 2 sittings (about 4 hours total I think - I watched Hogfather to pass the time).

The pattern is a modified 'Idiot's Delight' (Birdcage, Byzantine, Fool's Dilemma, whatever) The rings are 18g 1/4" galvanized steel. I bought 2lb of rings from The Ring Lord (I'll provide a link if requested) to give the company a try. The rings are pretty nice (sawn, not pinchcut) and well priced enough to make me take up the craft again...
Love weavin' steel Cheesy Friggin' HATE cuttin' rings Angry
The ankh I've had for 20 years and I never take it off except to re-craft. The unseen (whoops) clasp was ripped off something else I never wore

Enough babble, here's the whole thing:

And a closeup:

I love it! Ever since I was little I was into all sorts of ancient egyptian type baubles. I just thought that culture was so interesting! About a year ago I tried my hand at chainmail. I lost it. I'm a REALLY patient person, but it just didn't work out. Maybe I was using the wrong jumprings or something. Maybe I'll try it again. I love it.

PS: I'm hitting this rocks cause I know how long it took to make that..............and also because it does rock!  Wink

Thanks so much - it means a lot.

And you should give the mail another shot, it's a muscle memory thing I think - gets simpler as you go.

(ETA: I am a sucker for TAPS too - nice av Wink)

That is so nice!  Great job.  I used to wear an ankh too, in high school. I have no idea what happened to it. My sister does chain mail too, so I know from her what a PITA it can be to make those rings.

Ooh, that looks great! I've never tried chainmail but I can imagine what a pain it could be. Your piece tempts me to try it though. I love the idea of re-crafting a pendant that's important for you.

Thanks both SO much Cheesy

There is something comforting in both the thought of 'life eternal' and in the thought that there is one constant focus piece in an ever-changing world - The ankh has become the eternal yet ever-changing 'me'! It gets recrafted every couple of years, and I can almost always date a picture of myself by which incarnation of ankh I am wearing.

Luna1375 - Tell your sister to investigate 'pre-made' rings... Yes, I feel a teeny bit less hard core - like I'm cheating, but I know I'll still cut my own rings for some projects. But there is def something to be said for instant gratification, like letting someone else do the sh!tty part of the job for once so I can get right to craftin'! It's almost like having someone clean your studio for you (well, someone who does it right and puts all your supplies in the right place Wink)

gentlezombie - TRY IT, you'll like it! Very meditative - good for the soul...
(oh, and <3's to yr dalek av! Grin)

You could attach an owl and make it Discworld-esque. I'm kidding. That's pretty cool the way it is. My mom likes to do chain mail, too.

Obviously you are a fan of Discworld, watching Hogfather. I'm thinking of painting a pair of shoes with certain characters or symbols of Discworld on them. I love that series of books.

Heehee  Cheesy
Thanks owl lady! I hope you post those shoes if you make 'em!
I i actually have a little snowy owl pendant that I've been hoarding... but it's reserved for a Twin Peaks UFO.

However I've been getting into resin recently, and I was thinking a Susan Sto-Helit pendant might be fun... I mean, everyone does Lady Death and Neil Gaiman's Death (both of whom rock the underworld, don't get me wrong) but I think Susan gets left out.
I also really want to make The Luggage as a blanket chest, but I've been too lazy to mold all those feet, and jeez - sapient pearwood is so hard to come by these days Wink

(ETA: OH! And I have a Death of Rats sculpture in the works too - with real rat in!)
