Here's my entry for the First Ever Photography Challenge!

"Spiky Spider"

Click the picture to go to a bigger size

There is a cactus garden on the golf course behind my mom's house where this fascinating creature lives and where I was able to get a couple of amazing shots!

It's a Spinybacked Orb Weaver spider (gasteracantha elipsoides). They build enormous webs, even though they are a mere 1/2" in size. They are also, if you can believe it, completely harmless to humans.

Great photo!

I remember the first time I saw one of these spiders.  We were living in Florida and it had made its web on our car and a tree in our lawn.  I am terrified of spiders, and had never seen one with a back like that.  It gave me nightmares.   Grin  I love your picture though.

Fantastic photograph!  And horrifying at the same time. Wink  Glad to hear they're harmless to humans.

Exactly what I was going to say! It looks like a cross between a crab and a spider. You can keep the freaky spider with your cacti, then I know I won't meet him on a walk where I live!  Cheesy

That is super creepy! (In a good way!) I'd hate to be a fly meeting that spider!

This spider is intriguing. But also scary. It reminds me of the dream I had last night where i was chased by a massive spider who was bigger than my head but was also my "brother"

Great picture though!

That's a great picture!  I live in Florida and they're everywhere!  We see them all the time on the patio at my parents' house.

Most people I know call them star spiders and I think some people call them crab spiders.
