I spun some green yarn from a batt this week.  Of course, I don't actually have pictures... Wink

How do you do that, plying a single with itself? Do you measure how long it is and cut it in half?

You can wind the yarn into a center pull ball and ply the two ends together.  I have a ball winder, which makes it really simple (and is really fun to wind) but you can easily wind by hand.  Here's a tutorial with pictures: http://birdsnestknits.typepad.com/birds_nest_knits/2006/02/how_to_wind_a_c.html

You could also try Navajo plying, which looks like 3-ply.  Here's the video that I taught myself from: http://www.joyofhandspinning.com/spin-navajo-ply.shtml

This is actually one I've worked on over a long time because I don't normally have access to my grandmother's wheel with being away at university. I spun the superwash merino and plied one skein on my grandmother's production wheel and then plied the other skein on a Lendrum. It's really crazy to see the difference in the skeins mostly due to the different wheels used. I've not set the twist yet so it should help even it out when I do.

The green is less yellow in person and the blue is a bit darker too.

"Demon barber" is my favorite this week.  Also, I wish I could ply with thread as well as you all- I get a big floofy mess whenever I do it.  Can't tell if it's because I'm using a drop spindle, or if the singles aren't thin and tight enough or I can't maintain even tension or all of those things.  I only have one this week because my other single has failed me (i.e. my cat go ahold of it while I was trying to ply.  ARGH!)

This is from a corriedale roving I dyed, called Sakura.  It's about 86 yards, 2 ounces, thick and thin:

happy friday!

This week I have:

PINK MOUSTACHE. It's spun from more batts from moustacheridesyarn on etsy. I just LOOOVED spinning her batts!

This is spun from my own crazy carded batts I made with my new drum carder! Grin I spun up enough to make myself a hat.

NoodlePrincess, I love that crazy batt one ^-^ I can see that becoming a cool hat!

I mentioned I was making a bowl out of my fabric yarn and I sat and tried tonight.

It's short, good for a decorative thing, and needs lots of work on making everything even, but it was an interesting try. ^-^ It took a while to get the hang of it, so I'm hoping the second one comes out at least slightly more even. *laughs*

I'm bringing sexy back, I think I dropped it somewhere between the donut shop and the Cheesecake Factory.

Hey Fiber People: I am very interested in personal swaps for painted/dyed roving or top. I can swap supplies or crafted items. Let's talk!

Yeah! I can finally post for Fiber Friday because I got my wheel today. I started with some practice singles from some mill end roving and moved on to core spinning alpaca seconds I dyed recently, mixed with sari silk shreds and fabric. Then I plied them, which I tend to avoid with my drop spindle, to make this:
"cactus flowers"

I'm a little late, but I'm here! This is my very first Fiber Friday--I spun one little bit of yarn before on a wheel, but I just got the hang of using my drop spindle. I dyed two batts of Merino, one with Berry Blue kool-aid and one with Wilton food dyes. It's not enough to really make anything consequential of, but I love it!

I started really getting the hang of it by the time I got to the blue strand. It needs a lot of work, but I think I get it now!

I'm not doing personal swaps right now, but if you're interested, go ahead and PM me anyway--maybe we can work it out for later. Smiley
