Cats love cardboard boxes, that's a fact. But it isn't very decorative. So I tried to weave a kind of cardboard basket. It could have been way more sophisticated but it was okay for a first try   Smiley

I used some cardboard wrapper of their food too. You are never to young to learn that recycling is a good thing  Grin

On to the pics...

omg--your cat is totally smiling in the third pic!
Lol

Are you going to line it with anything or put some padding on the bottom?  I know that it'll cover up your weaving, but the cats look like they want a little cushion action....lol

They are adorable though----and great job weaving cardboard----that can't be easy!

Your cats look pretty happy with it! My cats love empty cardboard boxes too, the smaller the better so that they have to smoosh themselves into them  Roll Eyes

Omg, thanks for all the reactions!

I don't know why cats love cardboard, but I think it's a combination of
- the texture: they can put their nails in it to leave scent marks
- the sound: cats like crispy sounds
- the warmth: cardboard isolates very well (like people on the street sleep on it)

Next time I'll try some cardboard that's more thin/flexible. This one was very thick and I had to use tape to avoid breaking. It was a quick try out and I just posted it because I thought I might be inspirational  Tongue I think when I can weave more it can be much prettier.

In the time I am writing this, two of my cats have been lying in it. Of course it is well positioned before the fire  Cheesy Yay!

What a fantasterrific idea!  I think I will have to make one very soon!  We always have a ton of cardboard, and never enough cat beds for our two kitties.  I think a cardboard bed would look great next to our wood stove.  One cat always likes to snooze there, but the kitty beds are in other rooms.

Would cereal box cardboard work better?  I have a bunch of almost finished cereal boxes...

Ehmm...  Smiley You can try it out, but I think that might be a bit too thin. My next try will be with a left over of cardboard mailers from my boyfriend. It's a bit of a search between sturdyness and flexibility  Tongue

Yeah, cereal cardboard is bendy.  Maybe a sturdier cardboard base, with flexible strips of cereal cardboard to weave around?  Or bubble wrap strips woven around the cardbaord base.  I will definitely play around with this concept. Maybe I can get my stepdaughters to help, and when it's done, I can try my first photo post. (Ambitious goal setting...but getting the kids involved will be fun...)  Grin

Very good idea. I tried it with the supple mailer base but it was a disaster (or not)  Grin  Lips sealed

What nice and lovely cats you all have!!!

What's wrong with my monster? - she loves cardboard boxes too. Really loves to bite and destroy them. So I have to vacuum clean those fuzzes all the time ... or peeling them off from my socks and finding them in my shoes .... guess I will NOT make her a cardboard basket Wink

Love this idea and love the kitties and the bun!  My cat always can't leave boxes alone...he likes to rub his cheeks on the edges of them and knead the boxes with his paws.  The cats would probably still like that small one...mine would still try to fit his big tush in it.  Cute ideas!

Tee hee...so you see me laughing hysterically and our kitten looking utterly perplexed.

Well, this was a great idea, but sometimes I forget how large our Maine Coon cats are... My SD and I had a good time fashioning a basket from a packing box and bubble wrap left over from our escape--er, our move from California, but somehow I think our Maine Coon kitten isn't really going to be able to curl up in in. My SD had some nice ideas for weaving techniques, so even though it's kind of bust, we enjoyed working together.

The bubble wrap was actually great to work with, flexible but not too floppy.  I would use it again for weaving.

(Note to self: next time, measure cat circumfrence, and make sure basket base is larger than a dinner plate!  Cheesy  )
