neither! it's a mosaic-type stitch. you only knit with one color each row, and you use slipped stitches to create the pattern.

I just found this hat recently on Ravelry and I'm so glad I did! I love it! It's really cozy and deceptively easy. Thanks so much for posting it.

I love this pattern, it looks so simple.  So, if I choose not to use two different colors I can skip round 3-10 and just all those rows until I am happy with the length, right?
