I’m from Elba, NY a small farming town between Rochester and Buffalo in Western NY, known for being the “Onion Capital of the World” because of our “muck” soil. 

Besides onions, farmers grow lots of cabbage, corn, wheat, berries, squash, pumpkins etc. we are home to quite a few large family farms and one of the countries largest organic CSAs.  Being from a farm town has its perks for example you can always find a summer job picking something, your produce is super fresh, and your town has an Onion Festival every summer.  Which is the social event of the year complete with parade, music, rides, blooming onions, French onion soup and the crowning of the Onion Queen and since I live right across the street from the park where the festival is set up I get a front row seat to all the action. 

For this challenge I made two Ukrainian Easter Eggs.  Ukrainian Easter eggs or Pysanky is a process of applying wax & dipping eggs in dye baths, the eggs are decorated using symbolic colors & symbols.  The decorated eggs were used during spring festivals and Easter because the eggs represented the change from winter to spring, because eggs seem dormant and quiet and then suddenly brings forth life.  In Elba we are similarly waiting for the coming of spring and new life to spring forth.

I think you did a great job.  I need to get back to making them.  been a long time since i did any.   my son sent me to a class one year while he was in collage.

I don't like onions, but I love these eggs.  And yay for small towns and festivals and things like "onion queens"

i just found this post while googling to find out what time the onion fest is, and i found this post. i had no idea other craftsters lived so close by!! i'm from holley, btw. : )
