my bike was a shiny blue and i wanted it to be more natural looking... so... i painted it!  it has lasted two seasons without any problems.  my idea was for it to look like a river. still thinking about how to decorate the basket. any ideas?

that looks great. i think you should lay a net over the edges with some fish hanging on the side so it looks like a fisherman's basket

Maybe you could cover the basket using river rocks (using wire, like they do in jewelry (see no.6)).

oh, great ideas!  i like the idea of river stones in wire, also a little driftwood maybe. i remember those fisherman's baskets... it would be fun if mine had that kind of opening...

sherryc- it's acrylic paint (water based) mixed with oil based acrylic.  i'm not finding the close up photo, but the two create a marbled effect because they don't really mix.  i did sand my bike lightly with steel wool, but nothing major.  i didn't seal it with anything but it has held up just fine!

Wow. I love that. I might try to do something like that for my bike. As for the basket. If you could bleach the basket ( I don't know if you can). but get it the color of sand (or maybe try to glue sand in the crevices) and add starfish/ sandollars/seashells. and make it into a beach themed basket.

For your basket you could attach some silk water lilies and lily pads. Course then you'd want a frog or some dragon flies, too and things could get really out of hand.

Well, this is ages old at this point, but basket wise I would do a figurehead. And go with a ship theme, but I am a pirate at heart....Fabulous paint job, I love the swirl effect!
