Hi peeps. Tomorrow, Feb 7th, is Chinese New Year. Since I live in the middle of no where for college, I had my mom send me some ingredients from home (NYC) to make this delicious dessert. My family only makes this once a year for Chinese new years and it's so so so good. It's soft and chewy with red bean paste in the middle. You have to try it, it's really easy. We usually call it new year cake but it's not like the typical fluffy cake.

The pics aren't that great, plus I had an odd assortment of pans. But they taste better then they look. I promise!

Half of the square one had no sesame seeds on top which explains the texture difference.

Here's my family's recipe:

Chinese Red Bean New Year Dessert
Makes two 9" pans.

Ingredients:
1 lb sweet (sometimes called sticky) rice flour
4 eggs
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup oil
2 1/4 cup milk (I actually used lactaid but I think soy or rice milk should work too)
1/2 -1/3 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 - 2 cups red bean paste (depends on how much you want, you can buy this pre-made and they are usually sweetened, they come in packages as well as cans)
2 tsp white sesame seeds

Directions:
Mix everything except the red bean paste together. Place approximately 1/4 of the mixture onto the bottom of each pan (a little more than a cup). Bake 5-10 minutes at 325 F or until slightly firm. It should be hard enough to spread the red bean paste on top. Spread the paste on the baked layer. Pour the remaining mixture equally over the tops of the red bean paste. If the red bean paste still shows that means you put too much on the bottom layer but that's okay! Sprinkle sesame seeds on top and bake another 30 minutes or until edges are slightly brown. It will puff up but flatten out again when cooled.

ENJOY!! Post pics if you make this!

I love this because it's not the traditional American sponge cake with icing which is, for me, too sweet. Might have to try this as I love Asian foods too!

Happy New Year! I'm from NYC, too.. hehe
