I have recently been experimenting with using shank-backed buttons as pendants.  Here are a few of the necklaces I have made:

Claddagh with purple and green:


Tree Friend:

(of course some people insist that it's broccoli)

I got them at Jo-ann's.  I spend a lot of time on the button aisle.  well, too much time to tell you the truth. 
Terrible place to work, I spend half of my paycheck there!

I haven't quite mastered that feat yet.. I don't have any problems with the tree flipping, but the claddagh one is a problem sometimes.  the shank is actually vertical, so it just sort of.. rotates. D:
