I picked up some clear plastic in the fabric scraps bin at JoAnns last night and gave this a whirl on a swap bag I was making, what a fantastic idea I am so pleased with the result [I will try and post later] Thanks for posting this! I was totally stuck on an idea to embellish my bag with!!

Hey guys! Thanks for all the comments!
?s --> Answers.

cowgirl: I'm pretty sure that a few sentences will suffice instead of a tutorial, because this is so wonderfully easy! [I'll try to make a photo one next time, though.] Two warnings: This isn't a really great idea for super small bags because (obviously) you have to avoid the postcard while ironing, or you'll end up with a melted plastic-y mess. This is a lot harder with a small bag. Secondly, if you're lining the bag, make sure the opening that you leave to turn the whole thing is big enough to fit the postcard through. You don't want to have to crease it!!!
1.) Take your postcard. Measure it.
2.) Cut a piece of vinyl with dimensions 1/4"-3/8" longer and wider than the postcard.
3.) Position the postcard on your bag front before you sew the bag front to anything else.
4.) You have two options here: if you have a teflon foot or something else that is suited for vinyl, you're set. If [like me  Grin] you're too cheap to buy one, cut a piece of tissue paper or VERY thin magazine paper the exact size of the vinyl. Stack it on top of the vinyl.
5.) Carefully place the vinyl over the postcard [tissue paper side UP, if you're using it], centering it so you have an even margin on each side. To secure, I tape it down to the fabric. Pins leave unsightly holes in the vinyl. NOTE: CHECK FIRST. Some kinds of tape and vinyl are not well suited for each other and you'll have a hell of a time getting the tape off in the end. I find that the cheaper, the better.
6.) You can take the postcard out, sew three sides, then re-insert it and sew the last side, OR, just keep the postcard in and carefully sew all four sides. I try to secure the vinyl with one long line of sitiching, pivoting at the corners, instead of four different lines. I don't think it really matters, just makes it neater Smiley.
7.) If you used a teflon foot, you're done! If not, rip off the tissue paper and/or magazine page off. It gets hairy around the tape: I reccomend using tweezers to get the little bits off. Don't worry if you get loose stitches when removing the paper: just turn over and tighten the stitches along the back. Now you're done, too!
Now just finish the instructions (or follow your intuition) and complete your bag.
Hope that does it!! Let me know if that's okay.  Grin

snowwhitesuicide: I want to see what you came up with!!!! Smiley
And that goes for anyone else!! If you make a postcard handbag, post pictures and tickle me pink. Smiley
