Is there anything different about spinning with batts? I've only bought the fiber in the hanks.

I bought these from TerraBellaSpun on Etsy and I can't wait to get them.

Those are so pretty!  If it was me, I would gently pull the batts apart into strips (start at the edge and pull strips off), draft them out to a small roving, and then spin them.  When drafting, take care to do it SLOWLY, this will give you FAR more even results.  It will be time consuming, but the effort will not be wasted.  Taking your time now will not only save you time later, but you will have more predictable results.  Hope that helps at least a little bit Cheesy

WOW!  I was just going to post a similar question, since I got my first batts from LOOP@etsy the other day.  I spun one of them.. pulling it into strips from the roving, but I think I need to predraft way more.  I'm on my second one now and it's better, but I think I need even more predrafting.. The colors aren't swirling as much as I'd like.. I'm gettting more of one color, with the others being swallowed up inside and not shown...  I'm assuming more predrafting more will help that...

Jazzturtle- I just ordered a few batts from Loop yesterday! I was also wondering how the layers of colours would spin up in a batt...let me know if the predrafting helps!

oooo.. i totally love her stuff!!  I drooled for months, and then went crazy.. ordered like a pound!!!

Predrafting DEFINITLY helps.. I'm getting wonderful swirls of color now with a bit of practice.  Now I'm still on my spindle..  I won't have my wheel up and running for another few days..  but I'm sure with practice I'll get a swirl with that too.

But yeah.. pre-drafting definitly makes things better...

Loop was featured on the cover of Spin Off Magazine for Winter 2007!

Oh, I just love batts SOOOOOO much!

One of the great things about them is that they help you work on your long-draw method, if you're so inclined.  Spinning long-draw with carded batts gives you a woolen type yarn (instead of a worsted type), meaning it is much less dense than a worsted yarn, fuzzier, and actually warmer, since there are so many air pockets between the fibers.

I have no idea what you're talking about, so here's me with some yarn on my head.

Jazzturtle- I'm glad predrafting helped! Be sure to post pictures of your finished yarns! I've actually recently went back to my drop spindle after a year of wheel spinning. I can get certain results on it that I can't get on my wheel. I'll probably be spinning my loop batts on the drop spindle too!

Nicolassa- Seriously? That is so cool! I wish I knew where I put that issue of Spin-off...I should really just keep them all in the same place!

Stephknitz- Be sure to post pictures of your finished yarns! Those batts look like so much fun!
