My daughter loves Spongebob, so I made her a purse for xmas. I'm quite happy with it, even though the eyes and teeth are crooked and  uneven, but it looks worse on the photos than in person.

He has no legs. Maybe I'll add some, if inspiration strikes.

Here he is, what do you think?

I should have taken the photo in profile, the nose is my favorite part :-D

Here's a pic of the zipper

Sorry, that it took so long, I had more to do than I thought Id have. So after consulting a few conversation charts, yarn weight lists and my double sided measuring tape, I hope youll find this helpful.

By the way, Spongebob's name in Germany is Spongebob Schwammkopf, that is Spongebob Spongehead. Strange, huh :-D ... but sounds better than a translation would.

Please, keep in mind, that English is not my first language and I am used to metric measurement. And I made this for a little girl.

I wont give you exact instruction, but I tell you what yarn I used and what parts are needed. You will probably use different yarn anyway. I dont even remember everything, sometimes I just try around until it looks like I want it.

I took a photo of the top part of the purse to make the zipper part clearer.

I used:

Lyric by Coats in yellow, brown and white ... Cotton, worsted I think, H hook
Catania by Schachenmayr in white, red and black ... Cotton, fingering, E hook
Embroidery thread, 6 strands in blue (I didnt have another yarn of this color but I have all colour in embroidery thread, hehe)
Yellow zipper, 15 cm /6 inch
Piece of wire, about 12 cm/4 inch
Invisible thread
Dull embroidery needle
sewing needle
something spongebobby, like a toy or a picture, for reference

All Parts made in single crochet. Use big hook for body, strap and arms and small hook for small parts

2 rectangles: height 22 cm/8 5/8 inch, width 17 cm/6 7/8 inch
First brown (I made 6 rows) 3 cm/1 inch
white (I made 4 rows) 2 cm/3/4 inch
Yellow (I made 34 rows) 15,5 cm/6 inch
Then one row in back loop only, total after the line 1,5 cm/5/8 inch (3 rows in my case, one in back loop and 2 regular afterwards)

Bottom: height 17 cm/6 7/8 inch, width 5 cm/2 inch

Strap: (serves as sides and handle) width 5 cm/2 inch, length 155 cm/61 inches

2 Teeth: white, height 2 cm/3/4 inch, width 1,8 cm/5/8 inch

2 triangles: collar, white, height 2 cm/3/4 inch, width 3 cm/1 inch, sides 2 cm/3/4 inch
start at top and decrease to form a triangle.

2 circles: eyes, white, diameter 6 cm/2 3/8 inch

2 small circles: one row black, one row blue

2 half circles: sleeves, white, height 2 cm/3/4 inch, width 3 cm/1 inch
start at bottom and decrease to form a half circle

Tie: red

1 = 5 cm/2 inch
2 = 1,5 cm/5/8 inch
3 = 1 cm/3/8 inch
4 = 2 cm/3/4 inch

Start at top

Nose: yellow, length 6 cm/2 3/8 inch
I am not sure, that I could read the nose right.
Work in rounds. Ch 6, work 5 rounds then increase one or two, work another 5 rounds, sc2tog all stiches and tie the rest together.

Fold the wire in half and twist it together. It should be a bit shorter than the nose. I wrapped the wire with yarn, but you could probably use polyfill, too. Stuff the whole thing inside nose. That's not easy, because the upper part is bigger. Maybe stuffing with polyfill would be easier.

2 Arms: yellow,length of arm 11 cm/4 inch, length of hand 3 cm/1 inch

chain 17, *sc in ch next to hook, sc 2, ch 4*, repeat twice, sc in ch next to hook, sc 2, sc in arm until finished. There will be a hole in the hand. Sew it shut with invisible thread.

Block all parts, except the nose, hehe.

I use invisible thread, because I dont have to change colours and because its invisible, hehe. Its best to use it doublestranded and knotted, so it wont slip out of the needle, which happens easily. I used the dull needle everywhere, except for the iris and the zipper. And I used a simple running stitch for sewing mostly.

Arrange front parts on one rectangle, pin in place and sew. Sew iris on after the white circles, so you can make him look right. Keep in mind that the top part after the line is folded over and does not belong to Spongebobs face. Embroider lashes and mouth with black yarn.

I sewed on the teeth completely, because I forgot, that I wanted to attach them only at the top and I was too lazy to change it. They would probably need some starching if used that way.

Sew bottom to rectangle. Important: put left sides together, that makes him look more erm square. Sew strap to bottom and rectangle left sides together.

Sew sleeves to arms, arrange sleeves on strap and sew.

Fold top part of rectangle (90 degree) and sew to strap.

Cut off the fabric part of the zipper, if it's too long. Sew one side of zipper to folded part.

Sew back rectangle to bottom and strap, left sides together. Fold top part and sew to strap. Open zipper and sew to top part.

Embroider belt in black. I forgot to do this part.

Oh my goodness!!! I must have one of these! Can you please share how you made it with such marvelous sponge-y squareness?

SpongeBob is my classroom mascot and it would be a total riot if I could make myself a SpongeBob book bag. Please?

Note: I don't often beg for tutorials!

I don't click the "this rocks" button often, but this deserves it.  He's perfect.  If you add legs, I want to see it, lol.
