I agreed to make one of my guy friends a hat for Christmas/his birthday, and I was totally cool with the idea because crocheted hats are easy cheesy. Then he says he wants it to be lined in fleece! ACK!

How would I go about making a lining for a hat? I don't really understand how I would know how much fabric to cut and what to sew together, though I think I can figure out how to tack it to the hat.

Thanks in advance!

Is it a beanie? Easiest is to cut a rectangle (the circumference of the hat x the length from the top of the crown to where you'll sew the lining to the band [plus seam allowances!]), shape it into the crown with darts (you'll want to curve the darts or you'll end up with a cone-head!), then sew the short ends together with a curved seam the same shape as the darts.  Start the darts from the same point you started the crown decreases, fairly gradually at first, then steepening until all 4 or 6 come together at the top.  Trim away the darts on the inside, or he'll have bulky ridges showing through the crochet!  Then slip-stitch it to the inside of the band.  Ten minutes work with a sewing machine, tops.
