my son haye is OBSESSED with dragons. my best friend lisa and i made him a cardamom cake for his 2nd birthday in september (my friend just scanned and sent me the pictures yesterday...we moved at the end of september). we threw a HUGE party, probably 40 of our friends showed up along with about...4 or 5 of haye's friends (he is friends with our friends too though)...we decided to make the cake 3D not knowing that it would take us 12 HOURS to finish...but it turned out awesome! it was a huge hit, except when i had the brilliant idea to let haye and my niece maia share the head and he freaked out and ran away screaming when i served him half a dragons face.   Undecided other than that it was good Smiley he ended up eating some tail later on.  Cheesy we made it vegan because he is sensitive to dairy and eggs.

anyways, the icing is made of tofu, the scales are almond slices, the eyebrows, stripes on the tail and fire is fruit leather, the eyes are grapes cut in half with beans in them (the only inedible pieces), the toes are dried apricots and the spikes and teeth are dried mango slices. oh and the nostrils are cheerios. i guess those aren't vegan Tongue

what do you think?

This is such an awesome cake! I can't believe it's vegan as well! I bet it took forever putting those scales in.

Oh wow, I'm totally jealous!! I would LOVE to have a dragon cake for my birthday (and I'm 25). It looks so good, but I don't know if I could cut it open to eat!

12 hours to make, but how much time to eat it? That's some serious devotion... parenthood and all that stuff. Lucky you had a friend to help!

That's funny about your son not wanting to eat the head; once I made my niece a snowman cake and she started to cry when I cut her a slice. Kids just aren't into eating their friends I guess.

It's very cool.

There's not much in this world that can't be improved by either chocolate, bacon or glitter.

Wowzers!  That's pretty amazing!  Luckily, since he's only 2 you probably won't have to top that next year (and the year after that, and the year after that...).  I was surprised to see the flaming candles in the tail rather than the head.

we couldn't figure out how to get the candles to light from the mouth without burning the fruit leather or melting wax on it, so we took the easy way out Tongue

and i just about cried when i cut it. i was so sleep deprived and so sad that we were moving 1000 km away from our friends that it seriously hurt to cut it. hahaha.

i'm going to try and top it next year!

Really great job!  I wonder what vegan dragons eat... Tempeh princesses or something like that.
